What to know before comparing espresso machines

A few things are worth understanding before comparing espresso machines side-by-side.

Built-in grinder vs. separate grinder: a machine with an integrated grinder is one less appliance to buy and find counter space for, but a dedicated separate grinder is usually more consistent and easier to upgrade on its own.

Boiler and heating systems vary by design: a single boiler must switch between brewing and steaming, while a dual-boiler machine can do both at once. Thermoblock- and coil-style heating systems (used under different brand names) heat up faster but generally can't match a boiler's thermal stability.

Semi-automatic vs. automatic vs. super-automatic: semi-automatic machines require the most hands-on technique — grinding, tamping, and timing the shot — but give the most control. Automatic machines simplify steps like milk texturing. Super-automatic (bean-to-cup) machines handle grinding, dosing, and extraction with one touch, trading manual control for convenience.

Counter space and water tank size matter for daily use, not just at purchase — a narrower machine or a larger water tank can matter more day-to-day than a spec sheet suggests.

Milk steaming: some machines automate milk texturing, others rely entirely on manual steam-wand technique. Neither is strictly better — it depends on how hands-on you want the process to be.
